We had some amazing times with a whole bunch of our friends at Movie Night at our place. We watched projected movies with a room full of our favorite people. After the films really cool conversations were had. Aya and I miss Movie Night as it was. We took a small hiatus from Movie Night, but this summer we hope to start up again.

Below is a list of some of our favorite films, in no order whatsoever.

Movies we like

Open Your Eyes

A very strange and disturbing movie that manage to be both futuristic and a thriller without anything futuristic or violent about it.

After seeing it we've talked about a lot of things, this movie really made us think, though it is pretty depressing.

And Penelope Cruise proves again that she is the most beautiful woman on earth.

Stardust

Movie adaptations to books are often very problematic for me, I have good memory for books and I expect the movie to be exactly like the book, not only that, but exactly as I imagined it to be, which is often not the case... Saying that and though I like Neil Gaiman's "stardust" a lot, I still enjoyed this movie so much! even with the totally different and cheesy ending and a lot of other changes - it's just so much fun and really beautiful visually. We enjoyed it so much, we watched it twice, one day after the other.

Gormenghast

A dark and beautiful BBC mini series based on Marvin Peaks trilogy "Gormenghast" that was written in the 50's.

It tells a fairy tale political story of the Groan royal family and how a long long and pretty futile tradition is at risk at the hand of a kitchen boy climbing up the social ladder. The thing I like about it the most is how un fairy tale like this story is, despite the very fairy tale setting, and how complex and strange the characters are.

If you are going to watch it, do yourself a favore and avoid the last episode, unlike the first 3 it's really not interesting and pretty annoying and the ending is rather disappointing, so really, it's better not to know.

the world's fastest indian

This movie is about 2 of my favorite things, motorcycles and old people being cool.

Also, another nice thing about it is that nothing bad ever really happened, it's just this really cool guy which was basically an idiot savant of bikes and his quest to America to take place at the bonavile races on the salt lake. It's an amazing feel good movie and is really fun to watch.

Also, the DVD have a wonderful documentary that was made by the same director before he made the damatasized version of this movie, which is actually even more interesting, both because you get to see Bert Monroe in the flesh and because it really made me appreciate Anthony Hopkins acting skills - he get him so perfectly!

Eight and a half women

I've never seen a group of people evacuate from a room fasted then when we showed "eight and a half women". This film deal with so many sexual and social taboos (homosexuality, insects, prostitution, gender, bestiality and a few more, and in such an open way that people felt uncomfortable looking in each other's eyes after it was done. Personally, I really like this film.

Amelie

Amelie is like peanut butter chocolate pie - somehow it manage to be the sweetest thing in existence while at the same time, not disgusting at all. The small love story is being balanced with a lot of humor and humanity, and the movie got so many little jokes and detail, it's still interesting even when I watched it for the 5th time.

Bad Guy

This is one weird film - it took me a few days to even realize if I like it or not. But I think that just the fact that it made me think for so long makes it a really really good film.

I really like the way that though it's full of violence and prostitution and murder, it's still a very "clean" movie that speaks about ideal and honor.

existenz

I've seen this movie a few years ago and expected to like it less now that the internet and the gaming industry changed so much. I think I actually liked it more now, the philosophical question of reality and non-reality seem relevant then ever.
